LOCAL people are eagerly anticipating the Queen’s visit to Worcester tomorrow, especially those involved in the day’s celebrations and activities.

Ten residents from the Regent Care Home in St John’s, Worcester, will join the Queen and Duke of Edinburgh at Worcester Cathedral.

Among the party from the Sanctuary Care home will be 101-year-old Howard Llewellyn, who said: “I am really looking forward to the visit.

"I will be wearing my best shoes and suit and a big smile on my face to look at the kindest lady in the land.”

University of Worcester student Becky Lowe has written a song which will be performed during the official opening of the Hive.

The song, called Let’s Bring it To Life will be performed by Miss Lowe, a second year drama and performance student, and forms part of a musical ensemble taking place inside the Hive shortly after the Queen has opened the building.

Miss Lowe will perform the song along with children from Bishop Perowne CE Performing Arts College, St Clement’s CE Primary School and students from Worcester Sixth Form College.

The 20-year-old, from Worcester, said: “I wanted to draw attention to the fact that the building can only become something special when the people enter it and explore its contents – the people ‘bring it to life’ by reading the books, finding answers and opening up new worlds of fiction and facts.”

The deputy chief executive of Worcester Live, Liz Grand, has also been selected to be part of the royal visit.

Ms Grand was selected by the Dean of Worcester Cathedral, the Very Rev Peter Atkinson, to tell the story of Worcestershire for the Queen and Prince Phillip, including the history of its products and people who have shaped the county.

Ms Grand said: “It is a once in a lifetime experience and I’m very proud to be part of the day.”

Dunkirk veteran Reg Box, aged 93, from Malvern, will be joining the Queen for lunch at Worcester’s Guildhall.

Mr Box, a singer and entertainer, is committed to raising funds for the Midlands Air Ambulance and so far raised more than £118,000 for them in 17 years of fundraising.

He sings at locations and events across Worcestershire and at seaside holiday resorts and also runs regular bingo sessions at Malvern Town Football Club, all in aid of the charity.
