A CYCLING novice will be using pedal power to thank a Worcester hospice for the support it gave his niece as she battled a rare genetic condition.
Mark Burton’s niece Olivia Collins, who suffered with Aicardi syndrome, benefited greatly from the services of Acorns Children’s Hospice before her death last year aged just two years and nine months.
Aicardi syndrome is a rare inherited disorder where the structure that connects the two sides of the brain is wholly or partially missing.
Mr Burton, aged 40, from Droitwich, wanted to do something to show his appreciation to the hospice. When he saw Acorns’ upcoming 20-mile Severn Valley Cycle Challenge advertised, he signed up on the spot.
“Olivia’s family used to visit the hospice and I know how much they benefited from it,” he said.
The Severn Valley Cycle Challenge is on Sunday, August 19, and offers participants a 10-mile ride starting at Severn Valley Country Park, Alveley, or a 20-mile route starting at Bridgnorth. Both finish in Bewdley. To sponsor Mr Burton visit justgiving. com/Mark-Burton4.
