Drugged driver admits death charge Drugged driver admits death charge

A 27-YEAR-OLD man has admitted causing the death of a 17-year-old girl in a car crash.

Matthew Norcott, of Furlongs Road, Pershore, pleaded guilty to causing the death of Lara Smith by careless driving while unfit through drugs, and causing death while driving without insurance.

He also admitted possession of class A drugs with intent to supply at a hearing at Luton Crown Court, yesterday. Sentencing was adjourned for reports, and he was remanded to appear back at court in August.

Miss Smith, of Bowbrook Cottages, in Peopleton near Pershore, died when the car Norcott was driving ended up on its roof in a ditch after crashing into the central reservation of the A421 in Bedfordshire in November last year.

The former Pershore High School pupil was in the car with three other people at the time of the crash.

Lara was described as the “perfect student” by her tutor at Worcester College of Technology.

I know that what I am about to say won't bring this young girl back, and as a father my thoughts go out to her family and friends, but this is yet another case where someone has lost their life because of bad / dangerous driving. Surely the time is here when those who do take a life(since that is what the driver has done) should never drive again???

This was causing death by CARELESS driving, so it wasn't thought to warrant a charge of dangerous driving. Interesting charging decision.
