A TEENAGER was the victim of a racial assault while he played football in a Worcester park.

Police want to trace a couple who were involved in racially abusing and assaulting the 15-year-old boy, who was playing football with friends in Gheluvelt Park on Sunday.

They also want to talk to a white woman with two children of mixed race who tried to intervene.

The incident happened by the park’s tennis courts between 5.30pm and 6pm.

The boy was racially abused by a woman with an Eastern European accent who said her husband would soon be arriving.

Moments later a man approached the youth and pushed him against a tree.

During the assault, the boy was also pinned to the ground until one of his friends pulled the man off.

The man spoke with an Eastern European accent and was described as white, in his mid 30s, around 6ft tall, stocky, bald, and wearing a dark blue Levi T-shirt and green and brown, three-quarter length combat trousers.

The man walked away but returned briefly to threaten the youth before leaving the park via the main entrance into Barbourne Road.

Investigating officer PC Dave Hussey said: "This was a nasty incident which left the teenager quite shaken up. We are determined to find this couple and would appeal to anyone who was in the park and saw what happened to contact us. We are particularly interested in talking to the woman who walked over and remonstrated with the attacker as we believe she witnessed the attack.

"We also want to hear from anyone who saw this couple leaving the park or thinks they know who they are and can help us identify or trace them."

The youth suffered grazes and bruising but was otherwise uninjured.

The woman, who racially abused the boy, was also white, aged about 30, around 5ft 11in tall, slim with dark hair tied in a pony tail, wearing light blue T-shirt and light blue jogging bottoms.

Witnesses are asked to call police on 0300 333 3000, quoting 593-S-15071.
