A COUNTY school is among the second round of community sports projects to receive funding from the National Lottery.

Malvern’s Dyson Perrins CE Academy has been awarded £150,000 towards a £715,000 project to build a new synthetic turf sports pitch for football and rugby teams.

They were one of 38 community sports projects in the West Midlands to benefit from a £1,981,540 legacy windfall from the Inspired Facilities Fund, which is part of the Places People Play legacy programme delivered by Sport England.

School business manager Angelique Dalton said: “We’re absolutely delighted. It’s a fantastic opportunity for the school and the wider community, because it’s definitely going to be a community-based facility.

“It’s a major project for the school and we’re really proud to be hosting it.” She said if all goes well, work should begin in the autumn and be finished by the end of the year.

Other groups benefiting include Bewdley Rowing Club, which has been awarded £50,000 to restructure and upgrade changing rooms.

Stourbridge Cricket Club was given £32,810 to refurbish changing rooms. The facilities will all carry the London 2012 Inspire mark to celebrate the link to the Olympic games.

Sport England’s chairman Richard Lewis said: “With just 10 days to go until the Olympics, it is fantastic to be giving sports clubs in the West Midlands even more reasons to celebrate.

“Thanks to this, thousands of people can look forward to first-class sports facilities on their doorstep.”
