Two hundred farmers blockaded a milk processing plant in Droitwich last night over a nationwide dispute on milk prices.

Around 40 vehicles blocked Robert Wiseman dairy using tractors and trailers, in a peaceful protest which started around 8pm and lasted until midnight.

The farmers are angry over planned milk price cuts of up to 2p per litre, which four leading dairy processors are due to start from August 1.

Andrew Hemmings, vice-chairman of campaign group Farmers for Action (FFA), said: "At the end of the day if any workers had their incomes slashed, they would not be happy.

"It's been a hard summer and cutting milk prices would make the winter even harder.

"We're happy that we've got our message across."

Famer Michael Oakes, 47, who farms on the Bourneville estate in Bromsgrove and took part in the protest, said: "I'm a second generation farmer and at the end of the day, there's only so much we can take.

"None of us are getting enough money to stay in business, we love what we do but this cannot carry on."

Inspector Paul Crumpton, from West Mercia Police, said: "Police were in attendance in small numbers and the crowds dispersed of their own volition at midnight.

"There were no further issues."

No arrests were made.

A demonstration also took place at a Robert Wiseman dairy plant in Folston, Derbyshire, involving 400 farmers.

The National Farmers Union (NFU) has added its voice to the appeal, calling for a "fair deal", while Mid-Worcestershire MP Peter Luff has also supported their call.
