Family's three generations set to scale Kilimanjaro

THREE generations of the same family will have scaled Africa’s tallest peak as a charity challenge gets under way.

Gerry Marchment, aged 77, of Peterborough Close in Ronkswood, Worcester, climbed Kilimanjaro in Tanzania in Africa back in 1963, while serving with the Royal Electrical and Mechanical Engineers (REME).

After a 32-year career, he left the Army and moved to the city in 1989. Now his children Adrian, 52, and Sharon Marchment, 42, and 22-year-old granddaughter Zoe, are climbing the same summit in a bid to raise money for the Motor Neurone Disease Association.

They are part of a larger group making the attempt in June next year, in aid of a man whose daughter attends the Somerset-based junior football team which Adrian Marchment coaches.

Motor Neurone Disease is a condition which damages the nervous system leaving muscles wasted and weak, and the charity MNDA funds research into treatments for the debilitating illness.
