Muslim anger as water cut off during Ramadan fast

DRY: Councillor Jabba Riaz was called by many irate residents after their water was cut off.
FASTING muslims preparing for their pre-dawn meal were left high and dry after water supplies were shut off without warning.
Thirsty worshippers observing Ramadan – the month in which believers of the Islamic faith fast during daylight – flocked to Texaco in Bath Road in the early hours of the morning when they were left without running water on the hottest day of the year.
Supplies were disrupted by engineers from Severn Trent carrying out routine checks at about 2am yesterday.
The homes affected were in London Road, Wyld’s Lane, Lark Hill and Victoria Avenue in Worcester.
City councillor Jabba Riaz was inundated with calls from concerned residents, many of whom had gone without food and water for almost a day.
He estimated that up to 500 homes had been left without water for about 45 minutes.
Coun Riaz said: “It’s one of those things where if anybody wasn’t awake then nobody would have noticed, but that’s not the point.
“Nobody was informed about the cut off. People almost panicked.
“It’s quite an anxious time for those who fast.
“It’s extremely warm and muggy in the evening and people may need to drink water during the night - families with children, people who are sick.
“Severn Trent is a big enough company to have procedures in place. It’s not as if it was an emergency, that was the most annoying thing about it.
“You can go a few days without food but you need water. Putting it into context, it was the hottest day of the year and people are already dehydrated.”
Ben Jones, manager of Texaco in Bath Road, said there were three sales of large amounts of water between 2am and 2.30am.
He said: “One person bought 16.5 litres. That’s quite abnormal for that time of the morning. People don’t normally buy that quantity of water.”
A spokesman for Severn Trent apologised for the disruption, but could not confirm how many properties were affected or for how long the water was off.
He said: “We do have processes in place to make sure we don’t carry out work of this nature during Ramadan, but unfortunately on this occasion that was overlooked and we would like to apologise for this.
“However for the rest of Ramadan we will make sure that we do not plan any work without prior warning to our customers.”

Councillor Jabba Riaz achieved getting his name in the paper representing his core vote, (thus looking ahead to future elections) Worcester News filled a few column inches where otherwise there would have been a blank space and we all enjoyed reading and reacting to the story - otherwise we wouldn't be writing in this blog.
In fact this was news that was worth reading .. if only to annoy the people who will react against such stories. I'm one of the worst in thinking that we pander too much to minority communities be they religious, faddy or just plain annoying little groups who demand special consideration for their own chosen way of life, forgetting that that special consideration for them will probably affect millions of others - who in turn will also want special consideration.
For the headline writers we know that the word "muslim" will incite a reaction for and against and writing the headline is about getting people to read the story.
If you don't like the story nobody is forcing you to come on to this free site that tells you what's going on in an area where sometimes not a lot has happened.
Just take it as it is - it's a story. It's just sad that you can't wrap fish and chips in a computer screen !!!!!!!!!

Thirdly, the times and dates of Ramadan have no bearing on this. The UK is still officially a Christian Country and our Monarch is still head of the Church of England - therefore if immigrants to our country do not wish to abide by our fundamental religion, go elsewhere, maybe to a Country that has your religion as it's principle faith, we are very tolerant of other faiths, but don't push it too far !!

Why do you assume that muslims are immigrants for example? Could they not have been born here?
It's a tiny little story, about a group of people who were adversely affected more proportionally than others by the water being cut off at this time - the clue is in the first line for goodness sake, "pre-dawn meal".
Severn Trent acknowledged that a mistake had been made, and that they would normally not schedule work for this time during Ramadan, and warning letters should have been sent out anyway.
So it's a story about a mistake being made, not about "immigrants to our country not wanting to abide by our fundamental religion".
It's not massive news, but it's news nonetheless, I really don't see why the knee jerk comments are necessary.
I find all religion to be equally ridiculous, but try to be as tolerant as I can towards those beliefs, as I believe a forward thinking progressive country should be too. It appears I'm in the minority, in this "Christian" country. What a sad state of affairs.

Idiots who are Muslim phoned their councillor instead of the water supplier, when they would have learnt immediately that the water was of for 45 minutes. Nobody had targeted their faith and discriminated against them... how pathetic.
At the same time the anti-Muslim brigade piled in and took advantage of the stupidity of these Muslim idiots and try to turn this into an anti-Muslim issue, rather than just simple idiots with big mouths sounding of to a councillor who likes publicity. All religions have the same sort of idiots, the Muslims are no worse than any other religion.
Is there anything more to add to this "story"?

These types of incidents bring to light the racist and islamophobic attitudes that gravitate to the surface.
why are all the idiots replying in such a vitriolic and acidic manner? ST mucked up and their incompetence needs to be brought to light.
A company that makes a large profit in the millions has the obligation to look after its rate payers and hence should have informed the afected residents before hand.

If so was it the Quran or the Bible they looked up ..... and if so which competing chapter in those books which often appear to hold opposing views on the subject of water supply and almost everything else - sometimes within the same verse's!
Of course, if you look up Old News, there was a story, reported on the Mecca News web site in 610AD about the Desert Water Company cutting off the water off at 7am in the morning when the Christians were getting up to make a cup of tea. They complained too, and had a picture painted standing in front of their house (mainly with their arms folded) holding an empty pottery flagon upsidedown to show that they had run out of water.
The next day they were all executed for protesting, which is why there are no Christians in Mecca anymore, but the water was turned on 45 minutes later and everyone else was happy including Muhammad who went on to write a verse or two about the rules that 21st century Britain's should follow - referencing of course the writings of Matthew, Mark and Luke 500 years earlier who introduced the concept of Lent.

I dare say one or two affected complained, and that the complainants, as complainants do, blew the whole thing out of proportion...
The part that interested me were that the sick or the elderly were left dehydrated when fasting.
I'm not claiming to know the depths of any religion, but I do know, that the elderly, infirm and very young are not expected to fast, as part of their religion, at all.

Islam is a religion that teaches about equality and tolerance of all people regardless of race or gender (whereas in Britain two hundred years ago the slave trade was ripe and women were not allowed to vote.)
Many of the posters here seem to have several misconceptions about Islam which are unfortunately very common in this society and encouraged by certain newspapers.
Many of the problems Islam face is due to the cultural practices instead of religious practices of people living in the Middle east ( For example the Daily Mail recently published an article stating that tax-payers money was being used to build 'Islamic Toilets' before realising they were privately funded and that Islam does not copyright toilets - they are simply toilets which are preferred in the Middle East. Likewise unfortunately there are some people living in those parts of the world with certain outdated ideals - This is completely different to the philosophy suggested by Islam.
To conclude, I was simply trying to say that this article appears to be fairly harmless and does not set out to insult anyone unlike some of the posters here who appear to hold some very extreme and racist views.

Nowadays, we can watch contemporary tribalism in local conflicts as Afghanistan, Pakistan, Libya, Syria et aliis locis.
And free-speech is a legacy from free-men of Ancient Greece in a time were half of the world was ruled by middle-eastern or Asian dinasties where the word from god was the despot's.
I can also add that centuries later, when Sharia Law ( شريعة ) was developed, it never contemplated such an idea as free-speech. Even when there was a previous good example set by the Senate and People of Rome (SPQR)...

This story should have simply been about residents having their water cut off, in which case it would have been a non issue.
It is irrelevant that these residents were Muslim or celebrating Ramadan.
So they have either exploited their own religion to get publicity or been exploited by their councillor or the WN to get a cheap headline.

The muslim councillor chose to make this a muslim story. That is why it's about muslims.

I believe we are a nation pretty much founded on multiculturalism, our history and our language are testament to that, but it's just what I believe and choose to argue in response to calls for "immigrants" to "follow our Christian way of life".
I still think it has little to do with the story being discussed, but it's an interesting discussion when hyperbole and vague "truths" are removed from the equation.

I cannot believe some of the comments on here. It is irrelavent that Muslims observing Ramadan were not able to access water for 45 minutes in the middle of the night. The point is that this work should not have been done without informing everyone that it would be taking place. If this had been done, then people would have been able to prepare for this and would not have panicked thinking that the water was going to be off for some time. But there is no reason why any particular notice should be paid to ramadan or any other religious event, really.

He wonders if the Councillor who created this nonsense story is a secret agent for the BNP, as this type of story does more harm to the Asian background community than any march or demonstration by the EDL.
He accepts the differences in people and celebrates them. He doesn't want us all to be integrated, he doesn't want his daughter to marry a non-muslim, he believes Britain would and will be a better place when Muslims are the majority - he recons about 125 years.
My friend Chandra, (born Sri Lanka but speaks like he went to Eton) who married a Scottish lady and has no religion, is delighted to be a Grandfather twice over - once by a son who married a Asian girl and another by a son whose baby has been born outside marriage and I must admit I can't work out what colour the baby is because the mother is a massive mixture herself.
I'm a pretty bigotted white guy with views that Tony Blair encouraged immigration in order to get future votes for New Labour, think that further immigration should be stopped and that we should remove many of the non-indiginous arrivals - particularly from EU countries.
We three friends have great debates about things but remain friends. We are just guys together with family and interests like anyone else - and we all bracket other communities (often critically) in terms of colour, religion but most of all by the football Club they support.
So how hateful is it to ask a Manchester United fan how to get a champagne cork back in the bottle?

However, the guys who carried out 7/7 (and incidentally targeted me at my workplace before they chose to do the London Transport system instead) were indigenous to Britain - they clearly did not have the same life values that most of us have. But despite their ancestry, they were indigenous.
Eastern Europeans who have arrived in UK as part of the effort to integrate the whole of Europe into a single political structure, although mainly white, are not indigenous - but if they settle here and have children, those children will be - as are, for example, the decendents of the Polish people who came in 1939 and 1940 and stayed.
There isn't an answer to this debate - there are just different opinions (see the 111 responses above)

The majority of comments, like the article itself, are creating a divide - what is the point? If it had been on old lady, referred to as an OAP no one would have said a word. It’s 2012 for goodness sake!! Muslims, Seeks, Christians, Jews, Buddhists, Jehovah’s Witnesses etc have all been living together for many years now, it’s not a new thing so just shut up and call people people because that is what we ALL are!!!!Hear hear, Lalala24. I can't believe a story showing the incompetence of Severn Trent to inform it's rate paying customers of a distruption to their supply, thus not allowing for sufficient preparation, has come to this argument, and this amount of vindictive, hatebreeding comments! It doesn't matter what time it was off, or for how long for, it is the principle of the matter. And, for those making sly 'joke' comments about not being able to have a cup of tea. Well, the fact here is that a lot of people could hold off for an hour yes,... but not the residents who were muslim. They only have a short period of time when they can cook their main meal of the day and consume it. I can't believe the lack of awareness and belligerence of some of these readers! As lalala said WE ARE ALL HUMANS... by dehumanising, or segregating another human as 'an other' .. we are getting into very dangerous ground. For one, that is one way the holocaust happened. And as for the arguments on immigration, just do your own DNA genetic history, the majority of people in the UK are immigrants to some degree, look at the anglo-saxons and the vikings for instance. The only differing factor here is years and time in history. I'm even more shocked and appauled at the comments that followed mine, than I was when I initially posted. SHAME ON YOU!
This is basically a non-story, which could have been nipped in the bud if the people concerned had had the common sense to have a few bottles of water in the house.

'Indigenous people' are widely understood to be the people who originally inhabited a place, not people who have moved somewhere; for example the bush people of South Africa, or the Aborigines in Australia, not people who were born there; e.g. white Australians.
When used to describe species we often talk of "indigenous species" and "invasive species" (e.g. muntjac deer).
Maybe you have misunderstood the underlying semantics here?

Why should Severn Trent have to think about every possible action that an individual might take.
This Councillor played the Muslim card because at the end of the day he would not have had a story otherwise.
Yes anyone can complain but why bring your religion into it.
He started the debate and I hope he is really pleased with the outcome.
