TRAFFIC came to a standstill in Worcester as 1,000 people turned out to bid farewell to a brave cancer patient.

Christell O’Shea, of Birdlip Close, Warndon, died on Sunday, July 29, aged 39 after a long battle with cancer.

The talented singer, also well known for her fundraising, was first diagnosed with breast cancer in August 2008. After her treatment, a friend paid for her to spend time in a studio recording an album, the proceeds from which went to a breast cancer charity.

Friday’s funeral took place at Warndon’s St Wulstan’s Church at 10.30am, although because of the number of people there many had to listen from outside the building.

The service featured songs recorded by Miss O’Shea, including Songbird, How Great Thou Art and The Field of Athenry.

A tribute was read out by Stephen O’Shea, Miss O’Shea’s brother, written for him by Karen Baldwin.

“Christell would often say, ‘They broke the mould when they made me,” he said. “Christell was much loved by all who met her, whether it was for a long time or just a few minutes. She was always ready to see the good in everyone that she met and that was what made her such a good carer.

“Christell wasn’t shy if she saw a stranger tearful she would always have a hug for them. Once you met Christell you had a friend for ever. She had an eye for the ladies. People would fall in love just meeting her.

“Her love for her mum was so strong she would often say she would go first. Her dad was her hero. He gave her the confidence in life to be herself.

“She was known for having an amazing voice. Her family and friends are blessed to always be able to hear her voice.

“Christell was not scared of dying, only leaving her family. We all have our memory of her to share.”
