Lara Smith's drug-drive killer locked up

TRAGIC: Lara Smith TRAGIC: Lara Smith

A DRUG-driver who fell asleep at the wheel killing his 17-year-old girl passenger in a high-speed crash was jailed for seven-and-a-half years yesterday.

Matthew Norcott, aged 27, of Furlong Road, Pershore, was under the influence of ecstasy and had only five-and-a-half hours sleep in the previous 47 hours when he hit a central reservation on a dual carriageway at 83 miles an hour as they headed to a party.

The Ford Fiesta rolled over five or six times, throwing 17-year-old Lara Smith , of Bowbrook Cottages, Peopleton, near Pershore, into a field, before it ended up on its roof in a ditch.

The crash happened at 6.50am on Sunday, November 13, on the A421 at Lidlington in Bedfordshire.

The car drifted into the concrete barrier that separates on-coming traffic.

It veered to the side of the road and turned over onto its roof.

Lara, a back seat passenger, suffered severe injuries and died at 10.48am that morning. The other passengers, Jack Brant and John Long, were treated for minor injuries.

Bricklayer and farm worker Norcott had a broken elbow. Thirteen ecstasy tablets were found on him.

Peter Shaw, prosecuting, said that at 1am that morning, Norcott’s girlfriend had driven him and Mr Brant to Bristol.

The defendant drove back at 3am, arriving in Pershore at 4am. After dropping off his girlfriend, he picked up John Long and Lara Smith. They drove towards a party at Baldock in Hertfordshire.

“Mr Brant heard someone from the back shouting and he turned to look out to see the car veering across the lanes towards the crash barrier.

“He looked at the defendant and saw his head ‘hanging down’ and apparently asleep. Mr Brant tried to grab hold of the steering wheel. However, the car hit the central reservation,” said Mr Shaw.

The Fiesta rolled five or six times before coming to rest upside down in the ditch.

Police arrived and saw Norcott in shock and bleeding from a head wound.

The prosecutor said Norcott’s blood had a concentration of ecstasy greater than 0.32mg per litre, a “reasonably high dose”.

The text messages on his phone revealed he had been drug-dealing.

Norcott pleaded guilty to causing death by careless driving while unfit through drugs, causing death while uninsured and possessing class A drugs with intent to supply.

He had five convictions for 11 offences and three cautions, including driving with excess alcohol and driving while disqualified, possessing ecstasy and having no insurance.

Derek Johashen, defending, said Lara had been a family friend and he remembered holding her as a baby when he was 10 years old.

He said: “He says he deserves to go to custody. He treated her as a younger sister he never had.

“His own ridiculously bad behaviour led to her demise.”

Mr Johashen went on to say Norcott had raised £1,500 in Lara’s memory.

Judge Baker said no sentence could replace a life which was “immeasurably valuable”.

Only seven and a half years! This was murder knowing that he was on drugs so it should have been a life sentence. He was also putting other drivers at risk too so it shows he couldn't careless about anyone and not even insured either! I hope he's also banned from the road when he gets out after serving a measly three and a half years in prison! Justice, what justice!!!

Unfortunately he only got a 5 yr ban!! As you can read that he had previous serious driving convictions. I think people should ask why a life had to be lost and a family devastated!!unfortun
ately a driving ban has not stopped him driving in the past!!!! He will be out in half his sentence time! I feel this man will always be a danger on the roads and should have been banned for life and had the max sentence !

I agree that a ban for life is the only way to deal with this kind of mentality and jailed for life too preferably!

What a brilliant article from the daily mail.It should be posted on his facebook page for all his "friends" to see.
This so called man,was driving and taking drugs right up until the day he was convicted.
The £1500 that "he" raised was at local parties that Laras "friends" attended, where the majority were all high on drugs.
This "man" will not learn his lesson,he thinks it is an adventure in jail and just another notch on a reckless life.
As you can see on his facebook page he has not shown one tiny bit of remorse, and has one person calling him a "legend".Sadly this is an indictment of the times we live in.
I don't usually agree with violence, but I hope he is "got at" in prison

And this animal will be out of jail on 8th May 2016,that is his likely release date.
Not even 4 years, that's Britih justice for you.

The fact you all believe the Daily Mail at face value just goes to show you haven't got a clue what your talking about. How about you accept that justice is done. He will serve his punishment and have to spend the rest of his life knowing that he killed a friend.

So you are telling me he didn't drug drive,he hadn't taken ectasy just before he drove the car.Bloody hell get a grip, with "friends" like that who needs enemies.A friend wouldn't have knowingly got in a car mashed out of his head at 4 in the morning.Oh how his friends must be so proud. Also it isn't just the daily mail.It is The Sun,Daily Express,Local Papers and his own words in court

Do you actually read what you have written before posting it? Since when are The Sun, Daily Mail and Express credible papers. The papers twist the truth to suit their needs so that the masses feel outraged. Your telling me to get a grip, why not try reading a real newspaper and thinking about both sides of a case before posting a load of nonsense on a website.

Couldn't agree with you more jones86. I know Matthew very well and whilst his actions cannot be excused and the consequences have been laid out, he is not a thug nor is he heartless or evil as so many of you (including the papers) whi apparently know him so well seem to accuse him of being.

He didn't set out to do this and there is a lot of information missing from these articles some of it exaggerated (not to mention pure fabrication in many areas)
I am by no means expecting anyone to excuse him but for all you self righteous people who will believe anything for a bit of airtime to rant and who have nothing better to do with your time than to judge and make heartless comments on these sites why don't you spare a thought for his devastated elderly grandmother, his parents, and family who are heartbroken to read comments like 'he should have died' 'monster' etc

Yes it's tragic that his friend was taken away from the world and his family will no doubt be suffering forever and my thoughts are with them but keep nasty comments to yourself -  what's the point? it doesn't change anything and who are you to say these things?

I find it amazing how people hide behind these usernames  like 'avfc' 'lfc' being all high and mighty yet I doubt any of you would have the balls to say these things in person.
Who's the sick one now?

so well said ...as yet another long time friend of matthews i myself have been driven by him ...and i knew what i was doing when i got in the car as did others? ..i also knew lara and i know what she would have felt to all the negative comments,as his friends were her friends afterall? ...even though exeptions have to be made as some people have to focus their grief ,,well if this is the responce to somebody holding their hands fully up,pleading guilty for the love of a childhood friend and neighbour, ..its pretty dispicable ...all the negative comments above qoute facebook .'friends' comments ..does this mean you were friends on his facebook?..how two faced which is one thing lara wasnt..my thoughts go out to her family ,justice has been dealt..as the judge said ...no amount of years can equal a life .and remember all of us have special friends who we trust and that stand by us through exeptionally bad times ....
