An apprentice engineer accused of raping a 25-year-old Worcester woman has described in court how she “bolted” after they had sex in her living room.

Simon Walters-Melville said her actions confused him and he couldn’t understand what was happening.

Soon afterwards he heard “hysterical talking” before police arrived at the house to arrest him, Worcester Crown Court was told.

The pair met in Shakeey’s fast-food restaurant in Angel Street, Worcester, in the early hours of March 11 after separate nights out to celebrate friends’ birthdays.

The prosecution allege that the woman – whose alcohol level at 7am was calculated at three-and-a-half times the legal limit for driving – fell asleep and woke to find the defendant on top of her having intercourse.

But he insisted in the witness box that she “seemed to enjoy” the sex and had been awake throughout.

Walters-Melville, aged 26, of Winslow View, Winslow, Bromyard, denies rape, a serious sexual assault and attempted rape.

The accused, who formerly lived in Worcester, told how he drank two bottles of wine and most of a bottle of Jack Daniels whisky at a party before going to a club in the city centre.

There he drank more whisky, then went on to Shakeey’s because he fancied another drink, arriving close to 1.30am.

He bought whisky and beer before meeting the woman. They drank tequila, then got a taxi back to her home around 5.30am, taking with them a bottle of wine.

Walters-Melville claimed she indulged in “quite passionate kissing” as they sat on a sofa together before she straddled him.

He took off her underwear, she lay on the sofa and they had consensual sex.

“We were both under the influence of alcohol but not to the point of causing any concern,” he said. “She seemed to be enjoying it.”

She fell asleep on the floor after more sexual activity, he said, and he picked her up and carried her to the foot of the stairs.

“I stopped to catch my breath, at which point she woke up and bolted upstairs. “It was a shock, not quite what I was expecting.”

He followed her to a boxroom, where she was curled in a foetal position. He asked her what was wrong – but she ran to a bedroom and got under a duvet.

The woman went downstairs when Walters-Melville fell asleep and the police were called.

Medical evidence showed injuries consistent with forced sex, it was alleged. Her blood was found on the defendant’s shirt.

The trial continues.
