Interesting view as gipsies set up camp

A ROMANY gipsy camp has been set up on the outskirts of Worcester.

Three bow-topped wagons pitched up at the Norton roundabout on the A4440.

The group is providing an interesting view for passing motorists, with camp fire burning and piebald ponies munching the grass.

And, although residents have called to let police know they are there, West Mercia Police say they expect no problems from the group, as it has a good reputation.

Inspector Janet Heritage, police commander for Worcester, said: “People like to see them as they are true Romany gipsies and we’ve had positive comments about them already.

“The facts are that they do keep a tidy site and they clean up after themselves.

“They’ll be there probably for a couple of days and then move on.

“We never have any problems with them.”

All very quaint some might think but it seems to me that they are nothing but a distracting nuisance on what is a busy roundabout. If I parked my car where this lot have put their caravans, tethered a horse and more disturbingly lit a fire the police would, and quite properly so, move me on. Why should they be treated differently to the tax-paying majority?

These are people with a true Romany lifestyle and come and go on an annual basis causing no trouble.

Actually people do park there regularly ...there even was an advertising truck there when they arrived. That is there most of the year and is not moved on TDH123

As the police have said these ones don't cause any problems. It's the ones in the modern caravans hitched up to a transit with an Irish number plate that want sorting ASAP.

Thank you WN for printing this article. Its so refreshing to read the 'other' side of the GRT story - ie. that most are peaceloving, traditional, clean and tidy lovely people!! I know this group of gypsies and can vouch for the fact that any area they camp out on will be left tidier than when they arrived.

What mean minded sort of person would ring the police about this? How sad and pathetic of them. As others have said they are here every year, no trouble.

I pass this every day I don't find it a distraction as when driving you should be concentrating on the road rather than looking around! I think its a lovely site. They are more friendly than most people I walk pass in the street as they acknowledge you and say hello!

See them often at different places whilst on my bike - lovely people - horses keep the verges cut and there is never any mess to clear up. Wish other "travellers" would take a leaf out of their book!

I think it is lovely to see these REAL ROMANY people too. Verges trimmed by the horses, the place left clean and tidy afterwards...nothing wrong with that. Leave them be, they will leave when they are ready. A beautiful sight to see in England.

That's the feeling of all but two comments, so it's pleasing to know that not everyone is a mean minded killjoy. I still can't get over the fact that someone actually phoned the police about them. They should be charged with wasting police time.

They are travellers at the end of the day wether they be romany or not they should not be allowed to "squat" at the side of the busy road paying no taxes while we work hard and actually work for a living without handouts
The police should move them on and get them out of our county to whereever they started off from..

Thats what is normally written here, are the locals of worcester changing thier veiws??

Now you've embarassed yourself even more. I wasn't questioning the information regarding the Three Counties. You made assumptions and made comparisons about the people camped at the Norton Island. They are not the same as the people you were talking about. Your 'wicked sense of humour' is offensive and oh, not funny at all. People often make offensive remarks about things and then when someone stands up to them and questions it they say 'oh, I was only joking'. Well, man (or woman) up, act like a decent person and don't do it again please. You've ruined a perfectly nice story about perfectly nice people. Now, try and retain some dignity, and let's say no more about this. Thank you :-)

Twice a day here at WN Towers key members of editorial staff have a group meeting with the editor to update him with what's going on in the paper and online.

On Wednesday I had the unusual task of reporting that readers of this article were actually being nice about something and, for once, appeared to be in agreement with one another.
Understandably, I was practically laughed out of the room.

The few comments above demonstrate why.
Pack it in.
Please.

they do travel through the county every year, and are far easier on the eye and landscape then the stereotypical traveller.

But if i fill a bin liner with rubbish and dump it on a verge i would be prosecuted for fly tipping.
They fill a bin liner with rubbish and dump it on a verge and are praised for cleaning up after themselves.

We saw them camped up the other day and its nice to see people saying positive things. I was a little worrid how fast some people were driving past the horses though. Just a note and not trying to be pompus but just because they're using vanners doesn't make them more authentic than any other Romanichal or Roma. Still I'm pleased that Worcester people are being positive I never thought I'd see it, normally there's a lot of racist hot air.

the horses are tethered, and would be used to traffic spending their entire lives either towing the caravans on roads or tethered next to roads.

I bought a lovely little terrier from them when they were there just over 3 years ago. The lady I bought him off is lovely, and has kept in touch to see how he is on a regular basis. I have met them a couple of times since and she's always so pleased to see us and Webster! Lovely harmless people. And those moaning about them not paying taxes, so what! You are more than welcome to go try that way of living yourselves! We choose our way, they choose their way, where's the problem.

It's about time the Police started to do stop checks on these transits not just for the vehicle checks but for what they carry
