YOUNGSTERS had the chance to find out about prehistoric times at the County Museum, Hartlebury, this week.

Visitors were able to learn all about rocks, fossils and dinosaurs at the Let’s Rock event on Bank Holiday Monday.

Held in conjunction with the Abberley and Malvern Hills Geopark, the event was a family fun day with lots of hands-on activities.

Youngsters could create their own Silurian seascape or Carboniferous swamp scene through colouring or collage, make trilobite masks and design dinosaur badges.

They also had a go at fossil-casting and handled the bones and teeth of a real woolly mammoth. They also followed the Dinosaur Detective Trail around the museum, discovering some fascinating facts about the extinct beasts.

A museum spokesman said: “The children really got excited about the theme of the day and loved having their pictures taken with Vernon, the life-sized velociraptor, and Frank, our woolly mammoth.”

Experts from the Herefordshire and Worcestershire Earth Heritage Trust were on hand to answer questions and identify rock and fossil specimens that visitors brought along.

A museum spokesman said: “The children really got excited about the theme of the day and loved having their pictures taken with the life-sized velociraptor and Frank, our woolly mammoth.”

The craft activities were also very popular and a lot of adults seemed to be enjoying the chance to handle real bones, fossils, rocks and crystals."
