Heroes? Rescued people from burning buildings have they? Or been on the front line in Afghanistan (on our side, of course?)

I admire those who've fought adversity to compete, as well as the sheer skill of most of the competitors.

But calling them heroes seems melodramatic, and devalues a term best reserved to those who really deserve it.

I agree 'hero' is an overused word now - usually applied to anyone in the armed services, even if they've only been a filing clerk at Catterick and never actually seen any action (this is by the press and media, not the armed forces themselves I hasten to add).
.
However, definition of a hero can also be: 'somebody who is admired for outstanding qualities or achievements'. Considering what most Olympians have to give up to take part (careers, families, normal lives) I think most should be applauded and their achievments recognised. Probably 99% of them them will go back to obscurity now, so let them have their moment of fame.
