Fund-raisers are not over the hill
9:10pm Thursday 13th September 2012 in News
FUND-RAISERS: Cyclists Greg Dobbins, Brendan Buckley, George Lavalette and Nathan Hodgetts.
A GROUP of intrepid fund-raisers who were feeling over the hill have decided to do just that to raise money for Cancer Research UK.
Team leader George Lavalette has teamed up with friends Brendan Buckley, Nathan Hodgetts and Greg Dobbins, all from Worcester, to tackle the gruelling run from Land’s End to John O’Groats.
But not content with cycling from one end of the country to the other, they will also be scaling the UK’s three highest peaks – Snowdon, Scafell Pike and Ben Nevis.
The Over the Hills and Far Away 2013 challenge will take place next year and will see the group cycle between the three mountains as part of their route.
The idea for the event was born out of Mr Lavalette’s 30th birthday in May.
“I didn’t take turning 30 very well and along with a team of like-minded 30 somethings we wanted to set ourselves a challenge beyond anything we’d ever done previously.
“We wanted a challenge that goes above and beyond a regular tick box challenge.”
The group plan to travel 1,022 miles and climb 51,630ft with the combined ascent of the three peaks.
Setting out at the start of next May, they hope the month will provide enough daylight hours and are now in training to try and complete the challenge in 12 days with a target of raising £5,000 for charity.
As well as donations, they are hoping to find businesses to sponsor their charity bid in return for company logos featuring on their cycling tops.
Firms interested in offering sponsorship, should call Mr Lavalette on 07779 822429 or you should e-mail georgelavalette@ gmail.com.
Anyone wishing to donate to the challenge should log on to justgiving.co.uk/overthehillsandfaraway.
