Travellers vow to stay on land until legal steps taken

TRAVELLERS who have moved on to land near a Worcestershire village said they would only move on when they were made to.
The group of five families and 10 caravans arrived at Kerswell Green common, owned by Kempsey Parish Council, on Friday. And despite being asked to leave, they said they would only go when they legally had to.
One of the travellers, who refused to be named, said although they didn’t know when they would be leaving, she suspected they would be ordered to move on during the next week. “We will probably get a 24-hour notice to move in about a week,” she said. “This is our plight with the council. They won’t give us stable accommodation and they won’t let us stay on our own land.
“People say we are not wanted and we understand that, we don’t want to have to do this. We would prefer to have a site to call our own. We think we will move from the county. We will move up and down the country until we find a site. If they want this to stop they have to find more sites for us.” Chairman of Kempsey Parish Council Bob Bowley, who lives about 300 yards from the site in Kerswell Green, said he had visited the site a few times since they arrived from nearby Teal Turf in Kempsey where they spent a day.
He said: “I have been across several times. They have said to us when we get the court order we will move.” “We will be following the normal legal process to get them moved. The length of time it takes will depend on soon a judge or magistrate can attend to it. We would sometime next week.
“I haven’t had a lot of comments but the general impression is always people would prefer them not to be there. It is a common which is now used for walking or dog walking. I suppose it puts people off.
“It is always a concern what will be left but we don’t know until they go.”
The South Worcestershire Development Plan contains proposals for more traveller sites in the Malvern Hills area.

When travellers move onto a permanent site they pay taxes, utility bills and contribute financially towards living costs the same way as non-travellers in houses. This is surely preferable to the image cast in many people's minds of those who don't pay their way and get called 'tax dodgers, scroungers' and so on. Many streets in the Worcestershire area have travellers living in houses now, most people don't even know their neighbours are from the GRT community, why would they? why SHOULD they? these are people who want to get along in life, enjoy a peaceful existence and ensure the best for their children. Yes, a small minority find their way into the media having committed crimes - as with a minority of gorgias, live and let live. Please.

Buy land and it's yours. If you don't it's not and you have no right to be on it.
Pay taxes and contribute to society, expect healthcare and education. Don't? Then you have no right to it.

I wonder if the DVLA could check that these are legitimate vehicles ? And fully insured etc with corresponding certification. My experience has shown the duplication of vehicles Is an issue with the travellers . When the authorities turn up at the registered address the owner is 'surprised' by any allegation .
We all wish to do what we want to do do . All that is wanted is respect for each other and respect for our countries laws.
If you wish to change something we are a democracy and have various legitimate channels of government that we democratically elect. I suggest that one might consider the political channel rather than the protest and mock outrage. We are a democracy after all , and didn't a lot of our citizens die protecting this belief against bigotry and racial cleansing ? I don't know how many were travellers though......

Travellers are human beings at the end of the day and deserve to live how they want same as any of us do, they just prefer to travel around the country doing cash in hand jobs, as some of us wish we could do or the jobs that some of us would not even consider, yes there is a minority that do scam an do below par jobs, that is no reason the tarnish them all with the same brush, they have a very family orientated way of life, and I do wish that some of their ways were brought into "normal" life.
When you people on here say you don't want them where exactly do you want them? Anywhere apart from where you can see them.
Its absolutley disgusting that the local councils cannont supply land for them to camp on, with water,electric gas etc an they would pay for the services provided, they are not all cheaters an thieves and to be honest 90% of all travellers are cleaner than us normal well bred folk, you only have to take a look at the caravans they live in, they have so much pride.
I say let them travel if they so wish, let them an give them somewhere to stay an park up with proper facilities. Let the children have an education, as they will pay for it if they have to.
Some of you come on here and act holier than tho an try to pretend your better than any other person. Well you are not.

Today's Travellers that are being presented by clubber2000 as better than most are but a travelling band of scammers, thieves who defecate where and when they want. Not only do they steal from farm land, they break into the storage tanks and steal the diesel, or whatever they can get there hands on from anyone's property and yet this is seen as a normal and honest way of life by clubber2000.
Perhaps for a start clubber 2000 would volunteer to go and clean up after them. At one time it was a policy for the County council to provide mobile toilets when a group of Travellers parked on the roadside verges or lay-byes (which have mostly had to be sealed off because of the rubbish and filth left behind by them), when this action was questioned the council answer was that this was better than having a specialist team at great cost to the tax payer to clean up after them.
In a comparison not to long ago when a large part of Diglis was flooded and tax paying residents were living in the upstairs part of their houses, the public sewers became overwhelmed and the sewage was feeding back making their toilets unusable.Would the council offer these poor soles portable loos, YOU BET NOT.
So when these Travellers show that they are law abiding and wish to live in harmony even in their caravans then they will get respect from the communities around.

Who want them out of sight so you don't have to think about lower class citizens that are below you.
As I said these are people like you and me, they just choose to live a different way of life to you and me, they are not all the same they do not all leave rubbish, the ones that do are a small minority of the travelling community, I have lived with travellers I have worked with them and I find them a lot more appealing then some high and mighty do gooder like yourself.
A lot of travellers are honest law abiding people that just know how to work the system to there own ends, which in reality would you not do if you could? Its not them that are at fault its the government who are, they are the ones that try to cull them much like the nazis in the 2nd world war.

I don't see postings on here or anywhere calling for the extinction of travellers. The main theme is the disgraceful mess they frequently if not always leave behind, and so often when they have been camped for just a few days, having been out scavaging and undertaking paid for rubbish clearance to unsuspecting householders they don't go and pay tipping fees, but find the closest farmers gateway or a lay-bye / quiet lane, and dump the contents of their trucks. They even leave such rubbish where they have just been camping.
The last group who camped on Perdiswell on the carpark used the toilet and wash facilities for free, and again left all manner of industrial rubbish behind.Should they be welcomed back?
I can also recall while camping in Europe being too tired to drive further pulling into the nearest municipal campsite, and set our little Igloo tent up, had a quick bite and slept. In the morning we were woken by lorries being started and driven away, and we then realised that we had actually camped with the Romanies (who had lorries), their reaction to us was one of interest but open friendship and the women went out of their way to show my wife where the toilets and showers were, which were all immaculately clean. And after we had had our bacon & eggs waved us off on our way. So no they are not all bad, but they need to conform to the standards of the local authorities and bye-laws.
And yes I also know where I can find those houses where they seem to dump everything in the front gardens etc. So yes I would have them made to conform as well.

I completely agree with clubber2000. Let's get one thing straight here. The word gypsy derives from the nick name English folk gave the Rom when they first came to our shores. Just because a Romanichal is using a horse drawn carriage doesnt make them any more authentic and proper than an Irish Traveller. Travelling is not so much a lifestyle choice but a tradition by birth. I like the idea of providing serviced pitches too, it would be cheaper than a clean up and better for the families. I always write in support as I cannot bear racism and that's exactly what goes on every time this issue is raised. Oh and my caravan is paid for with hard earned cash and my husband pays tax on it too.

Totally agree, I know some real traditional family gypies and they do not want to be associated with these travellers etc what ever you want to call them.
I had some on a piece of my land where they broke into a heavily chained gate saying it was open, they had cut the chains, told me to get a court order, so i said call the police as i am having a random shooting contest in the next hour and they should be off the land in 10 minutes or they might get hurt, they went as the police turned up, i had them before and it cost me nearly £2000 to clean up after them and apart from that caught them trying to get into an outhouse of mine, i sorted that with my dogs.

And that's not the only law they come to break,just a bit of thieving, massive Fly tipping, ignoring most motoring laws, pester or worry or intimidate older people over prices charged for minimal jobs.
