A hairdresser who lives next door to the chip shop has also revealed how he is fearing losing thousands of pounds of trade.

Dave Benbow Hairdressing was left with terrible smoke and ash damage.

Mr Benbow, aged 41, was forced to cancel 10 appointments yesterday and dozens more for the rest of the week due to the damage. He said: “We’ve been here eight years and we’ve never seen anything like this. I locked up at 5.30pm and had just got home when I had a call from a client to say, ‘You’d better get back up here, there’s a fire at the back of your property’.

“It’s just a nightmare. I was fully booked (yesterday) and had to cancel all the appointments I reckon I’ve lost about £300 for just one day. “We employ three staff and I’ve told them not to come in.”

Surely his (or the Chippy's) insurance policy would cover loss of earnings...

The insurance company will make every effort to keep the claim to a minimum. It's extremely difficult to prove lost earnings and the insurers know it.
Mr Benbow will be very busy dealing with the insurers, cash flow, his staff, his customers and cleaners/builders through no fault of his own. Many hours of extra work and anxiety are not covered by insurance

I agree with the above comment, i had dealings with an insurance company for years and they do there best not to pay anyone, the poor guy in the shop should get some professional advice and persue the insurance company or companies, yes there will be the old cry about compensation claims but it was not his fault and that's what insurance is for.

I too agree with the comment above. Remember the fire at London Road Nursery one Sunday in March this? My son went there and 6 months later the insurance company and others are still debating things as it was a Grade 1 listed property. I wish Dave and our local chippy a speedy return to providing good services. :o)
