CELEBRATING their 65th wedding anniversary tomorrow are Alex and Beryl McEwan, of Grafton Close. in Upton. Mrs McEwen is from Kinnersley, and her husband is a Scot from Glasgow.

The couple met in 1945 at HMS Collingwood, a Royal Navy shore establishment in Fareham, Hampshire, where she was a Wren and he was in the Navy.

They got married in the parish church at Kempsey in 1947 and lived in Coventry for a while, but moved back to the Upton area in 1951. Mr McEwen spent his career as a production engineer at Dowty in Gloucestershire, and Mrs McEwen worked for the Inland Revenue.

“But we tended to keep quiet about that,” she said.

The couple have two sons and a daughter, four grandsons and two great-grand-daughters. And the secret of a long and happy marriage? “Patience and a good sense of humour on both sides,” says Mrs McEwen.
