THE University of Worcester has won the Architects Journal Retro Fit Award for its specialist Riverside sports and arts building.

Judges selected the building, inset, for setting new standards in upgrading existing facilities, by converting a former car garage to incorporate a sports hall, specialist sports teaching rooms, a dance room and full changing rooms with showers, as well as a large social learning and internet space.

Russell Pope, director of capital development projects at the University of Worcester, said: “We are delighted to receive this award for the Higher Education category.”

The Riverside building is situated on Hylton Road next to the university’s new Worcester Arena – a 2,000-seat arena due to open in the new year.
