Weevils get to work

A BID to tackle weed problems in Malvern’s ponds using an army of tiny weevils is off to a promising start. Earlier this month Malvern Hills Conservators released the insects into Hall Green pond at Guarlford, in the hope of them munching their way through the troublesome water fern choking its surface. Although it is too early to know for certain, conservators deputy conservation officer Jenny Palmer said the signs were promising to date – as our picture shows. The weevils, which are native to North America, reproduce extremely quickly but – as they only feed on waterfern – will die out quickly once it has gone.
