A MURDERER convicted of killing his partner is back behind bars in after he failed to return to a Worcestershire prison while on day release.

David William Gilbert, who was sought by police for failing to return to HMP Hewell on September 22 when he was on day release. He was located in Penzance, Cornwall by police this morning.

He was jailed for life after being convicted of the murder of his partner in 1992, but was nearing the end of his sentence and was being considered for parole.

As a result of police enquiries, officers from Devon and Cornwall Police Force Support Group attended an address in the town at 9.15am and located the 56-year-old.

Gilbert, from Penzance, was detained without resistance and was taken into custody in Cornwall pending his return to prison.

West Mercia Police worked closely with colleagues from Devon and Cornwall Police and the Prison Service to help trace Gilbert.
