FIFTY cows were rescued by firefighters in a dramatic operation after a lorry nearly overturned on a country lane.

Hereford and Worcester Fire and Rescue Service used winches to right the lorry after earlier attempts by locals to steady it.

All the cattle were safely removed and herded into a neighbouring field.

But as your Worcester News went to press firefighters were still trying to make the vehicle safe.

The drama happened at about 2.30pm at Holly Bush Lane, off the B4203 at Wolferlow, near Bromyard.

In total 52 cows and calves had to be removed from the lorry.

One crew from Worcester, two crews from Bromyard and a specialist urban search and rescue team (USAR) from Droitwich were scrambled to the scene.

Station commander Steve Fox from Droitwich said: “When we arrived we stabilised the vehicle and got the cattle off into a neighbouring field.

“As the vehicle is in an unsafe position we’re trying to right the vehicle as it could go down the bank into a neighbouring property.”
