DIGGERS have moved in on the site of the former Royal Worcester Infirmary hospital to begin work to transform barren piles of earth into an orchard and performance space.

The site between Infirmary Walk and Croft Road forms part of the University of Worcester’s new city centre campus, which includes two new halls of residence and the Hive.

The site will be transformed into an orchard with pathways, lighting and seating, as well as space for university art projects, performances, light and film projections, sculpture, installations and temporary structures.

Eleven types of fruit and nut trees will be planted, including local species of pear and apple, hazel, cherry, blackcurrant, redcurrant and gooseberry.

Should this report start with the tile "The unfinished project" I thought there was supposed to be further construcion on this site - what is the plan? and was there supposed to be a hotel next to the Hive?

What is the plan? They've built what was on the plan. Where have you been? Hotel? Where do you think there would be space for one? Unless of course you are referring to the secret plan to build hotel rooms under the railway arches and paint them all gold... ;-)

There was a plan for a hotel by the Hive but no company would sign up (despite Worcester having an under-supply of hotel rooms).

There is no money for further university expansion on the site so the orchard idea replaces any more student accommodation blocks.

Thank you Francis, this should shorten the anti- student discussion. Which we were told would bring an extra 3,000 students to Worcester, and the added value. Although I have questions about the Hive, this wouldn't have happened without the University expansion.
And we as a Nation have to try to keep up with Universities from Asia, particularly in the fields of Sciences and Engineering.
This country have a history of our inventions that were given to America in the Lease Lend agreement / blackmail during World War 2, and we still have to do catch-up now.
Whilst I agree that America played an important part in that war, they also became very rich off supporting nations such as ours. I think it was under Gordon Browns government that the last payment was made.
So yes we need education but not in the fairy subjects but as previously said, the Sciences and Engineering

It seems that the university have cherry picked their original planning permission. They have built the student accommodation which will be lucrative to them and they have reneged on the rest of their original obligations; the parts with no income for them. An all round poor show by the university and poor follow up by planning committee.
