IS it a bird, is it a plane? No, it’s your friendly neighbourhood Spidercrow hanging around the top of a roof in Feckenham.

This somewhat precarious-looking scarecrow was just one of a number of crazy and creative ideas on display for the 9th Feckenham Scarecrow Festival over the weekend, which saw the imaginations of villagers run riot.

Other humorous entries included a gang of Mexican scarecrows roasting crows on a spit.

Ian Bellion, chairman of Feckenham entertainments committee, said there were 55 scarecrows this year – one more than last year – and that hundreds if not thousands had enjoyed the two-day event. The majority of the scarecrows – about 37 – adorned people’s homes and gardens but others are made by the local schoolchildren.

He said: “It’s a nice, free festival for the public to come and enjoy. “Most of the scarecrows are in people’s front gardens so people can have a look – and a laugh. “There’s no theme, we just let people’s imaginations run. “It has been extremely successful with lots of scarecrows and lots of people attending. “It’s a big community event, but not a money-maker – it’s for people to let off steam and do something silly.”

In democratic fashion the villagers themselves decide on the best scarecrow through the ballot box as part of the festival’s finale.

Mr Bellion said he believed the event was now so popular, even if they decided to cancel it the scarecrows would spring up anyway.

The winning scarecrow was Shaun the Sheep and Farmer Crow.
