TOURISM services in Worcester have been handed to a new provider - with the Chamber of Commerce set to sign a £120,000-a-year contract.

The chamber will take over from VisitWorcester in February on an initial two-year deal, and will also manage the city centre.

The chamber’s role will include running the city’s major Christmas Fayre, which attracts visitors from around the country, and the festive lights switch-on.

It will also develop an entirely new service aimed at boosting tourism in the city.

VisitWorcester has owned the contract for the last six years, and made a fresh bid to carry on running the services, but was outbid.

The city council say the majority of contracted staff from VisitWorcester will transfer over to the Herefordshire and Worcestershire Chamber of Commerce.

Councillor Simon Geraghty, city council leader, said it was "good news" for Worcester's profile.
