Environmental campaigners are heading to London on Saturday to persuade the Government to take action on climate change.

Worcester members of Greenpeace and Friends of the Earth will take part in the I Count event in Trafalgar Square to call for a Climate Change Bill to be drawn up.

It follows warnings in Monday's Stern Report that the Earth's temperature could increase by 2-3C in 50 years, leading to droughts, mass extinctions and the deaths of up to three million people from malnutrition.

Rod Howell, of Worcester Friends of the Earth, said: "Surveys have indicated widespread support. It's widely recognised that while individuals can do their bit, such as changing light bulbs and leaving the car at home, it's Government that has the power to make the biggest cuts.

"If we are to keep global temperature rises to a tolerable level, we need urgent action now."

Already, 410 of the 646 MP's in the House of Commons have signed up to support the Bill. Peter Luff, MP for Mid-Worcestershire, and West Worcestershire MP Michael Spicer have pledged their support, while Worcester MP Mike Foster is currently in talks with Friends of the Earth.

Pete Robinson, of Worcestershire Greenpeace, said: "These representatives from our groups will help send a message to the Government that action must be taken."
