WORKERS will be getting on their bikes today for cycle to work day.

Organisers are hoping to encourage cyclists across the country to cover thousands of miles collectively for the event.

It's the fifth year the event has taken place and among those taking part in Worcester this morning is John Pound.

Mr Pound will cycle the 3.4 miles from his St John's home to his HR job at Defra, based at County Hall, via cycle ways across the Diglis bridge and Red Hill Lane.

He said: "I nearly always cycle. I think it's a great initiative, the provision of cycle ways is actually very good for my route to work.

"County Hall have a great secure underground bike store with bike tools for the inevitable puncture."

Also taking part will be workers from water recycling company Aquabio, in Hallow.

The company already has a scheme for cycling to work, which sees employees log the miles they undertake in return for a donation to cycling charity Sustans.

Over six months, the team has cycled more than 17,000 km, clocking up a donation from the company of £442.70.

Also joining in was Jason Sidebottom-Butler, who cycled 7.6 miles from Worcester to Wychbold to his NHS job as a wheelchair technician.

He said: "It normally takes 30 mins and it's great exercise.

"Car drivers are great and give me plenty of room.

"I just wish the roads were a little better in places as sometimes I have to pull out further into the road to avoid dangerous dips or drains."

Cycle to work day is promoted by Cyclescheme UK and Halfords.
