FIRST-year university students preparing to move away from home for the first time next month are being reminded of the importance of registering with a GP.
The NHS in Worcestershire say young people enjoying living away from home can often push health needs to the back of their minds.
But they have said this is also when they are most vulnerable to stress and anxiety as well as other problems.
Associate medical director with NHS England in Herefordshire and Worcestershire, Dr Jonathan Leach, urged new students to consider what they would do if they became ill.
“You can’t predict when you’re going to feel under the weather and being ill and away from home for the first time can be really stressful,” he said.
“Therefore registering with a local GP is really important.
“Once registered, students will have access to local health services just like they would at home which will ensure continuity of care especially if they have ongoing health needs.”
To register with a new GP patients are required to provide their name and address, date of birth, NHS number if known, name and address of previous GP. Some practices may also ask for a proof of identity such as a passport or driving licence.
