WORCESTER'S CrownGate shopping centre is celebrating success for the second year in a row as it again achieves first place for promoting good health and safety practice at work.

The initiative, launched by the Health and Safety Executive (HSE), commended the CrownGate shopping centre for its efforts to promote safe practices when working at height during European Health and Safety Week, which took place in last October.

John Hopkins, the centre's operation manager led the initiative, embarking on in-house refresher training for contractors.

CrownGate's tenants were also a key to the campaign, each receiving a health and safety booklet, identifying the common causes of falls and how to prevent such accidents happening in their stores.

A local community artist was invited into the centre to sculpt ladders out of rolled up recycled newspapers in Bell Square during the awareness week.

Fun and innovative, the display highlighted to shoppers the dangers of working at height. More than 300 shoppers picked up the free HSE booklet that was available in the centre, offering top tips for ladder and stepladder safety.

Carolyn Mantle, centre manager at CrownGate, will be attending an awards ceremony in London later this month to collect the award on behalf of the shopping precinct.
