THE heritage of an "extraordinary" Worcester church building is to be celebrated.

An open day will be held on Saturday (September 13) to highlight the history of St Swithun's.

The city centre church is one of the best preserved Georgian churches in England, according to the Churches Conservation Trust, which maintains it.

A host of free activities for families are planned at the church as part of a national initiative to raise awareness of the UK’s collection of heritage buildings.

The church will be open between 12pm and 4pm and visitors can take part in stone carving and Tudor music making.

Tours will enlighten anyone wanting to learn more about the building, while children can discover the stories of St Swithun’s.

Bellringers will be on hand to welcome visitors in style, and cakes and refreshments will be available.

Will Scott, chairman of the Friends of St Swithun’s, said: “St Swithun’s is an extraordinary building in the very heart of the city.

"We hope everyone will come to experience and enjoy its wonderful history, architecture and atmosphere, and the special activities on offer on September 13.”
