AN HISTORIC church needs to raise £30,000 to "move it into the 21st Century".

Grade II* listed St John the Baptist Church in Claines - which dates back to the 1400s - is in need of a revamp, according to churchwarden Rachel Cramp.

The church has served the community of Claines since 957 and needs work done to keep it relevant.

Mrs Cramp, 62, said: "It's an historic building and we want it for future generations.

"We're not talking unrealistic amounts, we know we'll have to be economical but £30,000 would be a big help for us.

"If we don't manage to raise the funds and move it into the 21st Century then it won't be fit for purpose and serious things could happen."

Edward Elgar was a regular visitor to the churchyard, which is where his grandparents were buried.

Mrs Cramp, who has lived in the parish for 33 years, said: "Elgar used to visit and it's reputed that he brought music manuscripts and sat there reading them like a book.

"You can look towards the Malvern Hills from there and we imagine that's what he did."

Any cash injection would go towards work on the church's stone mullions on its windows and replacing parts of the roof.

Because it dates back to the 15th Century, there is also no toilet or kitchen area, which Mrs Cramp said they hope to add.

"We'll be seeking some grants, which aren't that easy to come by, so we're looking for anybody in Worcester who might be able to help us make the applications," she said.

The church regularly attracts 100 people to services by vicar Jo Musson on a Sunday.
