A SHOP owner described as an “inspiration” is retiring after almost half a century of working in Worcester.

George Papadopoullos, 73, of Papson’s Continental Delicatessen in Cornmarket, has put in 45 years of business in the city but will shortly be taking up a quieter life.

The entrepreneur, who previously ran Antonio’s Fish and Chips and Papson’s Coffee Lounge, is selling his current store and looking forward to spending more time with his grandchildren during his newfound freedom.

He said: “I have had a lovely time working in Worcester, it has been really nice.

“I have met so many good people. I will definitely miss my customers and I hope they will support the new owners.

“But I am looking forward to relaxing with my wife and family, singing in the church and playing some golf during my retirement.”

Mr Papadopoullos, who had a banner installed above his current store thanking staff and customers for their support over 45 years, put his business success down to the personal touch.

He added: “The best thing in business is to be very close to the customer and remember that the customer is always right.

“You have to be very friendly and accommodate them every time.”

Julietta Serghi, Mr Papadopoullos’ daughter, similarly paid tribute to her father’s character.

She said: “People are going to miss him on many levels and he is an inspiration.

“He is compassionate, humorous and always gives his all.

“People love the interaction with him and he has always provided good, old-fashioned customer service.”
