FOR the first time in Worcester Lions Club’s 45-year history one of its members has the “honour of serving the organisation” for the whole of the Midlands.

Ian Haffner has been given the position of district governor, meaning he oversees lions clubs across the region.

His wife Joy Haffner is holding a charity appeal for the homeless during her husband’s term of office and will be fundraising for six homeless charities including St Paul’s Hostel in Worcester.

She said: “There are a lot of local, good causes out there and the homeless seem to miss out often.

“It is an important cause and I hope people will support our efforts.”

Funds have been raised so far through a variety of events including a banquette and a talk and the cash collected has helped purchase items for the homeless including toothbrushes, soap and travel bags.

Mrs Haffner is also calling for members of the public to donate items such as sleeping bags and rucksacks to the appeal and is encouraging golf enthusiasts to sign up for a charity golf day in Ombersley on Thursday, May 14.
