IT’S not unusual to see an airborne duck in Worcester, but the one which opened the St John’s village fun day on Saturday was a very special quacker.

Bertram T Duck is a glove puppet belonging to St John’s vicar Rev Chris Stuart, and to mark the opening of the event, held in and around the church, Bertram zip-wired from the top of the church tower.

“I use Bertram in services and assemblies for local children and he’s become very well known,” said Mr Stuart. “So it seemed only right and proper that he should officially open our fun day. It was very brave of him to do this for us.”

Although rain was forecast for Saturday, in the end it didn’t materialise, allowing everyone to enjoy the event on a warm summer’s afternoon.

“It’s not just a church event,” said Mr Stuart. “It’s a way of bringing together the whole community of St John’s.”

The day included a fun dog show and entertainment from local musicians and dancers, including young people from Christopher Whitehead School.

Inside the church could be found home-made cakes, a quiet space and children’s activities, including a treasure hunt.

And there was plenty more to enjoy outside, including teas, pancakes cooked to order, stalls and a BMX cycling tack, specially set up by the Malvern Hillbillies BMX club.
