ON the very unpromising evening of Saturday, July 21, two dozen or so members and supporters of the Worcester Anglo-Hellenic Club (plus a few children and grand-children) braved the weather and flooded roads to gather for their annual barbecue and garden party.
This year the event was held at the home of founder member Eleni Carroll and her husband Kevin in Barbourne.
They had thoughtfully erected a gazebo which provided shelter for the hardier guests, but even they retreated indoors as darkness fell.
Despite the weather, the company thoroughly enjoyed themselves. Soteris Georgiou gave his usual virtuoso performance on the barbecue and members tucked into a wide range of Greek and Cypriot dishes which they had prepared themselves, washed down with ouzo and other appropriate beverages.
Conversation was lively, much of it cantered on past or forthcoming visits to Greece and the islands, against a background of Greek music. Unfortunately the lawn was too waterlogged for Greek dancing.
Acting chairman Geoff Peters thanked all those who had made the evening such a success in difficult circumstances and presented a small token of appreciation to the hosts Eleni and Kevin for their filoxenia' (warm hospitality).
As usual there will be no meeting in August and the next meeting will be on Thursday, September 27, at the Worcester Golf and Country Club, Bransford Road, Worcester 7.30pm for 8.00pm, when there will be showing of the classic Greek Film The Woman In Black (in Greek with English sub-titles). New members and visitors are always welcome.
