AT the January meeting we welcomed back John Walton who gave us a most interesting talk about another of his journeys with a group of King’s School students.
In 2005 they travelled to Tanzania, where they climbed Mount Meru and Mount Kilimanjaro. During the climb they travelled through desert and up through the rain forest where they saw many exotic trees, bushes and flowers. They were amazed at the variety of insects, birds and animals. Once above the tree line they struggled through scrubland and finally to the icy, cold peak. The took several days on the climb so that everyone could become acclimatised to the changing height and atmosphere.
The group also visited the Serengeti Nature Reserve and Ngorongoro Crater which stretches 10 miles across and is more than 2,000 feet deep.
The school had been raising money for the Amoni Children’s Home, near Kilimanjaro, which was set up for homeless boys who were living on the streets. While there, the students helped with maintenance work and skill training. A new home has been built and a farm started so that the children could grow their own food.
The next meeting of the guild will be on Thursday, February 18, at 7.30pm in Bromyard Road Methodist Church Hall when Daphne Everett will give a talk entitled From Green Fields To Yellow Book And Beyond.
