AT the October meeting, members and guests of the monthly Greek interest club enjoyed a highly informative talk by guest speaker Lucas Ball, entitled Musical Modes in Ancient Greece.
In the theory of Western music the ‘mode’ generally refers to a type of scale. This usage reflects a tradition dating to the Middle Ages, itself inspired by the theory of ancient Greek music.
With the use of a keyboard, reciting poetry and singing in both Ancient and Modern Greek, Lucas presented an entertaining discussion of the origins of musical mode terms and sounds by reference to Greek philosophers including Aristotle and Plato. The lyre and the kithara were the most important stringed instruments of this time.
The monthly raffle was won by Geoff Peters.
The next meeting of the club is on Thursday, November 24, when long-standing member John Bosworth will present a talk covering the early stages of the modern Hellenistic era, 5th century Athenian Democracy: a blueprint for the future?
Anyone wishing to come along will be made most welcome.
Further details can be found at the club website at wahc.org.uk or by contacting the chairman Peter Reynolds on 01386 462541.
