AT the November meeting, members and guests of the monthly Greek interest club enjoyed a roaming discourse with a twist by long-time member John Bosworth entitled Fifth-Century Athens – A Blueprint For The Future?
Fifth-century Athenian democracy is a big subject, and was skated through with handouts for synopsis reference and a sheet of names to Google for individual wider ‘research’.
The ‘blueprint for the future’ part of the title became a looseranging section which roamed over areas of Athenian democracy that might have some resonances for today, and included a brief rundown of democracy as developed in Australia and New Zealand since penal colony/settlement.
The monthly raffle was won by Sylvia Traiforos.
There will be no meeting in December.
The next meeting of the club is a Vassilopitta party on Sunday, January 8, at Loretta and John Proctor’s home in Malvern.
The Vassilopitta is a special cake made for the Greek new year, a tradition which dates back to the fourth century AD.
A coin is baked in the cake with the ingredients, and the person receiving the portion containing the coin is considered blessed for the new year.
Anyone wishing to come along will be made welcome. Further details can be found at the club website, wahc.org.uk, or by contacting the chairman, Peter Reynolds on 07855 441804.
