OUR April meeting opened with the speaker, Wendy Hill, thanking Comer WI for inviting her to visit for the second time to talk about Sir Edward Elgar, his wife and their daughter Carice.
She referred to Elgar’s early life, his struggles and aspirations and his meeting with Caroline Alice Roberts and their subsequent marriage in 1889.
Caroline Alice, a well educated and wealthy woman some nine years older than Elgar, was thought to be the driving force behind Elgar’s success in becoming England’s most successful composer.
There was one child, a girl called Carice, who reportedly spent a rather lonely life at boarding school, returning home on Sunday for lunch and then to church.
Jan Smith thanked Wendy for her most interesting talk, interspersed with a little of Elgar’s music.
Vic Jackman, president, thanked all who had helped to make the group meeting in March such a success, arrangements were also made to see Me And My Girl.
Comer has been awarded a group bursary.
The minutes and correspondence were dealt with by secretary Beryl Lord.
Viv was pleased to welcome one new member, Glenys Taylor, and one visitor.
She reminded members of the resolutions evening in May.
The raffle prizes were won by Beryl Lord and Betty Gwilliam.
The evening ended after refreshments.
