Families in Worcestershire can start learning another language at a free activity day organised by Worcestershire County Council's Libraries and Learning team.

Parents or carers can bring along their children to language learning workshops which are taking place on 22, 23 and 30 June. All activity days are aimed at specific age groups and they will take place at County Hall Campus, Spetchley Road, Worcester. All the workshops are free and no previous experience of learning a foreign language is necessary.

Friday's workshop (22 June) will focus on helping pre-schoolers get an early start with learning a second language and explain some popular methods for developing bilingualism. The day's activities will include games, activities, songs, rhymes, DVDs, flashcards and posters to keep a second language alive in the home. This session will run from 10am until 2pm.

School pupils in Year 6 or 7 and their parents or carers are invited to come along to the workshop on Saturday 23 June, from 10am to 3pm. This workshop will be of interest to those who are interested in finding out how they can support their child with the formal language learning of secondary school. Families will experience language workshops together (French, German, Spanish or Italian) and there will be lots of practical activities for both adults and children, as well as tips and advice for parents and carers on supporting children's language learning.

On Saturday 30 June there will be a workshop for primary-aged pupils, which will run from 10am to 3pm. This is designed to give parents a good selection of tools and ideas for promoting early language learning with their children. The focus will be fun games and activities to try together which will encourage children to develop an interest in foreign languages and to begin their language learning experience.

Anna Lee, Worcestershire County Council's Community Learning Manager, said: "From French to German, Spanish to Italian, if you would like to find out more about learning a foreign language with your child or children this is the perfect opportunity to do so in a relaxed and fun way. No previous experience of learning a foreign language is necessary and it's free to book on any of the workshops. We would be delighted to see you there."

Parents or carers can book their free place by phoning 01905 822722 or emailing adultlearning@worcestershire.gov.uk. Parents or carers who would like to find out more about language learning techniques to pass onto their children are very welcome to come along on their own.
