A WORCESTER City fan suspected of lighting a flare while watching his team before he allegedly assaulted two stewards trying to eject him, faces a club ban if he is convicted of the crimes, the club says.

Police say Luke Stock carried out the alleged assaults on Saturday as his team were knocked out of the FA Trophy after losing 4-1 at Aldershot Town.

The 20-year-old, from Carrock Fell, Warndon, Worcester, has been charged with two assaults and possession of a firework or flare at a sporting event and will appear before Aldershot magistrates the new year.

Worcester City have distanced themselves from the alleged actions, saying they strive to be a family club.

Colin Layland, the club’s vice-chairman, said the man did not travel on the official supporters’ coach and that if the allegations were proven, the man would be banned from the club.

“We will not tolerate it and will not accept it,” he said.

“We are a community club and try to make it a family club.

“We will look at taking action to ban him should he be convicted. It’s difficult to say but a ban could be at least five years.”

Mr Layland said 80 Worcester City fans travelled to Saturday’s game, which saw the club’s Wembley dream shattered by the Conference Premier side.

A Hampshire Police spokesman said: “Two stewards were assaulted at Aldershot Football Club on Saturday, December 14 as they ejected a man from the ground after he was suspected of igniting a flare.

“Luke Stock, 20, from Carrock Fell in Worcester, has been charged with two assaults and possession of a firework or flare at a sporting event.

“He has been bailed to appear at Aldershot Magistrates Court on (Thursday) January 2.”

In October, a linesman was hit by a flare thrown from the Tottenham supporters’ end during their match against Aston Villa, at Villa Park.
