AFTER a moving ceremony in Droitwich last weekend, organised by the Droitwich British Legion to commemorate World War One, schoolchildren in the town have launched a commemorative book filled with poems about the war.

At the ceremony in Droitwich town centre, children from Westlands First School, laid poppy crosses carrying the name of each soldier from the town to die in the conflict, and many school children from a number of schools went back to the Droitwich British Legion after the service to read out poems they had written especially for the occasion.

The poems have been put together into a book, and is now on sale to raise money for the town’s Poppy Appeal.

An exhibition of the poems is also set to go on show at Droitwich Library.

Stephen Moore, branch chairman of the Droitwich British Legion, said: “I would like to thank the school children and teachers involved from Chawson and Westland's First Schools, Witton and Westacre Middle Schools and Droitwich High School for providing poems and letters. It is really important that children learn lessons from the past to continue to create a better future and of the sacrifices many have given. The book is on sale to support the Poppy Appeal so that veterans and families involved in conflicts can continue to be supported.”

The book is available to buy from the British Legion in Salwarpe Road, and it’s hoped it will also be on sale in the tourist Information Centre and the library before too long.
