VETERAN Droitwich footballers are taking part in a special match later this month to raise money for a local charity.

Past and present members of the Droitwich Veteran Football Club, some of whom are now in their 70s, are coming together on Sunday, September 21, for a celebratory match to raise money for St Richard’s Hospice.

Frank Stacey from the club said: “The idea came from one of our members, John Armstrong, who is celebrating his 70th birthday. I asked him what he would like to do, and he informed me he would like a charity football match with past and present members with all proceeds going to St Richards Hospice in memory of absent members.”

The club has been up and running for 20 years now, so the average age of players taking part in the match will be 60. Over its 20 years, teams have played matches all over Europe, even playing a local team in Droitwich’s German twin town of Bad Ems.

Mr Stacey added: “This could be the first walking game of football in Worcestershire.”

The game is kicking off at 11.30am on Sunday, September 21 at Droitwich High School, and anyone is welcome to attend.

There is no entry fee to the event, but both teams are being asked to contribute, and anyone else is welcome to add to the fundraising efforts.
