A COMMUNITY garden in Droitwich has won recognition from the Royal Horticultural Society as part of the Britain in Bloom Neighbourhood Awards.

The garden on Charles Henry Road, is owned by Fortis Living, and has been developed over the past 12 months from a patch of overgrown wasteland, into somewhere that children and their families can grow their own vegetables, fruit and flowers.

The garden has even provided vegetables for use in the company’s sheltered housing schemes, being used in the kitchens as part of meals for residents.

Inspectors from the RHS described the garden as “truly amazing” and praising it for the “range of individuals and community groups taking an active part”, awarding it a level three in the retain in Bloom scheme.

Paul Edwards, Fortis Living’s community officer for Droitwich has been overseeing the project from the beginning. He said: “It’s been an amazing transformation and we are really pleased to receive this recognition from the RHS. We have over 50 tenants involved in the project now and it is great to see them returning again and again to help with tasks throughout the seasons.”
