NEARLY 2,000 people came out to pay their respects in Droitwich on Sunday for the town’s centenary Remembrance Parade, which took place on Sunday, November 9.

Members of the Droitwich Air Cadets, led the parade, which set out from the Community Hall on Heritage Way .

Members of the Royal British Legion were saluted by councillors and other civic leaders, who then joined in with the parade, following its traditional route through the town to Victoria Square, with residents lining the route.

In Victoria Square the parade concluded and the town was led in a service of Remembrance by the war memorial joined by clergy from all denominations including Reverend Nigel Byard, Reverend Peter Tibke, Reverend Jane Wilson, and Captain Jenny Forman from the Salvation Army.

This was followed by a short service of dedication to remember Private William H Goddard of 13th Batallion of the Royal Fusiliers, who died in 1918, but only recently had his name added to the memorial.

After the dedication a hush fell over the crowd for a two-minute silence, before the Last Post was played, and wreaths were laid by representatives from community groups, town organisations and businesses.

Town mayor Councillor Bob Brookes said: "It was a magnificent turn out and it was very moving. I was also pleased to see so many young people there and hopefully beginning to understand the meaning of the occasion."
