A DROITWICH pensioner enjoyed an extra special treat for his 70th birthday this week, when he took on the role of a zoo keeper at Dudley Zoological Gardens for an entire weekend.

Thomas Robinson from Woodhall Close in Ombersley, got the chance to work with rare lemurs and Humboldt penguins as part of the Keeper for a Day experience, which usually only lasts for one day, but was stretched out into two days of fun for the occasion.

He said: “The experience was a surprise for my 70th birthday and my daughter and wife both wanted to share it with me so I came on the Saturday with my 23-year-old daughter Sam and the Sunday, the day of my birthday, with my wife Carol.

“It was a very busy weekend and I think a few of the animals recognised me on the Sunday from the day before.

“It was thoroughly enjoyable and getting so close to the animals was unbelievable. The keepers were very dedicated and well informed. I learned such a lot and will treasure the memories of the fabulous weekend.”

Peter Suddock, chief executive at the zoo, added: “Thomas and his family had an amazing time and we were delighted to make his birthday weekend so special. We introduced Keeper For a Day and Little Zoo Keepers for eight to 13 year olds as an experience a few years ago and it has proved so successful that staff are kept busy with requests from all over the country.

“It’s a unique opportunity to get close to some of the rarest animals on the planet and work alongside our keepers with a wide range of exotic and endangered species most folk see only on their TV screens, and funds raised through the scheme support exciting conservation and animal projects at DZG.

“It also offers a brilliant photo opportunity for the family album and makes a great gift for all occasions.”

Mr Robinson enjoyed helping staff with their daily duties including feeding, cleaning and caring for the animals, many of which are endangered species.
