A WORCESTERSHIRE MP and 'pro-Remain' Government minister says the EU polls are too close for comfort after latest surveys put both sides almost neck-and-neck.

Harriett Baldwin said she is pulling out all the stops to try and win over the undecided voters with less than two weeks left before the polls open.

YouGov's latest "poll of polls", based on an entire week's worth of sampling, puts Remain on 45 per cent and Leave on 44 per cent, with just one per cent in it.

It comes as the deadline for voters to register is today being extended to midnight tonight, via rushed House of Commons legislation after Tuesday night's website crash locked out thousands - if you are still unregistered follow this link.

Mrs Baldwin, who has been touring Britain backing Remain in her role as a Treasury minister, has issued a rallying call by saying the vote on June 23 is "more important than a general election".

She said: “The referendum looks very close.

"I’m keen to speak to as many undecided voters as possible and am planning to hold further events to try to answer questions from people who have not yet made up their mind.

“I am also keen to try and make sure we engage with as many young people as possible in this campaign.

“This decision will affect their lives for years to come - it’s much more important than a local or general election.

“Many people are thirsty for more information and I am happy to share my thoughts - people often say ‘better the devil you know’.

“I also think that, like our Scottish friends, we should aim for a really high turnout to show that as many people as possible have thought about the issue and cast their vote in a decisive way."

Yesterday, officials from the Electoral Commission said they expected turnout could top 80 per cent - the kind of figure not even seen in a general election since the last world war period.

Worcester MP Robin Walker has issued a plea for anyone not yet registered to do so, saying it would be "tragic" for anyone to miss out given the extension.

"This is a once-in-a-generation opportunity, where every vote and every voter counts," he said.

"Whatever your view on the referendum this is the chance of a lifetime to have your say.

"I have urged all local sixth form colleges and schools, plus the University of Worcester to ensure that students are registered and know the importance of this vote.

"Young people have most at stake as they will live with the consequences of this decision the longest.”

“What is vital is that everyone with the right to do so gets on and registers to vote.

"It would be tragic to have formed a view on this matter only to find that on June 23rd you miss out on the chance to express it.

"I would urge everyone resident in Worcester to check that they have fully registered."

Meanwhile, Leave.EU campaign chief Arron Banks has claimed the move is an attempt to "rig the referendum" and said he was considering seeking a judicial review of today's extension - and potentially the outcome of the vote.

Downing Street has insisted the action is legal, but Mr Banks said it was an attempt to "load the dice" by getting more Remain voters on the register.

"For the Government to alter election law during an election period is absolutely unprecedented and unconstitutional," he said this morning.

"This isn't some democratic initiative, it's a desperate attempt by the Establishment to register as many likely Remain voters as possible before polling day.

"Terrific efforts have been made to target young people, thought to be more sympathetic to the EU, while older voters who backed Remain in 1975 but have grown heartily sick of the bloc after 40 years of broken promises were given a body swerve.

"We believe it's unconstitutional at best and have been advised that with legitimate cause we could challenge this extension."

Despite his comments Michael Gove, a key figure helping lead the Leave camp, is backing today's extension but made some controversial comments of his own.

"People will only have one chance to vote on whether they share free movement of people with Turkey, so the more people who register to vote on 23 June the better, and we welcome the extension of the registration deadline," he said.
