A LEADING former Brussels politician is set to stand for parliament in Worcestershire - saying he will push for ANOTHER EU referendum.

The Liberal Democrats are on the verge of adopting Edward McMillan-Scott as their candidate in West Worcestershire in a significant anti-Brexit intervention.

The 67-year-old, who lives in Pershore, is a former vice-president of the European Parliament and spent 30 years as an MEP from 1984 to 2014.

He earned himself a high-profile across the continent for leading the EU's anti-corruption campaign which sparked a police fraud squad investigation and the resignation of all 20 commissioners in 1999, including Neil Kinnock.

He was also the European Parliament's Tory group leader from 1997 to 2001, but ended up leaving the party due to David Cameron's decision to split from the mainstream Christian Democrat/Conservative group after the 2009 elections.

He is set to be adopted as the Lib Dem candidate tomorrow, putting him on a collision course with Conservative Harriett Baldwin, a defence minister who holds a massive 22,578 majority.

It will make Brexit even more of an issue in West Worcestershire, in a constituency where most voters backed Leave.

Mr McMillan-Scott said: "We need a serious election, and a serious choice because these are very difficult times for the country.

"These days, nothing is certain in politics - people are quite naturally concerned about Brexit, every day we get news coming out which may cause people to change their minds.

"At the moment we have no idea what Brexit will look like, and we're the only party saying we'll give people a new referendum at the end of the process."

Mrs Baldwin, who tripled the Tory majority in the constituency in 2015, said: "In the last seven years I have worked hard across the constituency helping to represent local people, pressing for further investment in our local NHS, investment in flood resilience, fairer funding for schools, investment in infrastructure such as road, rail and rural broadband and helping to grow our local economy.

"Much has been done, but there's more to do.

"I backed Theresa May to be Prime Minister last year - I now welcome the decision to give people in West Worcestershire the chance to back her to deliver strong and stable leadership for our country on June 8."

Meanwhile, the Labour Party has announced its West Worcestershire candidate as Samantha Charles, an ex-midwife, while the Greens are standing Natalie McVey.

UKIP is also expected to contest the seat, with all candidates due to be in place by Thursday.
