A WORCESTER pub is getting ready to stage two big General Election hustings - giving voters the chance to grill the city's next MP.

The Cap 'n' Gown in Upper Tything gained a national reputation after running 10 weekly hustings events in the run-up to the 2015 elections.

Now landlord Ted Marshall wants Worcester's parliamentary candidates to be taken to task once again in two lively Q&A-style gatherings.

The first one will take place from 7.30pm this coming Monday where the candidates will be grilled on domestic issues like the NHS, the economy and education.

Then on Monday, May 29 from the same start time the topic of debate will be Brexit - with each hopeful asked to outline their views on Britain's upcoming EU divorce.

The boozer is expected to be packed on both nights, with people urged to arrive early to get the best spots.

Mr Marshall said: "Once again we'll have the best quality hustings in the city - this is the best chance people will get to question these candidates.

"Just like last time they'll be asked to do speeches on why they want to be Worcester's next MP, and then I'll be taking questions from the public.

"I think it'll be packed, we've put one evening aside for Brexit and another for domestic matters, so we can really get a debate going."

There are seven candidates going for the Worcester seat on June 8, with Conservative Robin Walker defending a majority of 5,646.

Labour Councillor Joy Squires is also contesting the seat as is Green Party Councillor Louis Stephen, in a re-run of 2015.

Also in the frame is UKIP candidate Paul Hickling, Lib Dem hopeful Stephen Kearney, independent Alex Rugg and Mark Shuker, who is standing for a movement called Compass.

Elsewhere in the county, other hustings event have been announced for the coming weeks.

West Worcestershire's parliamentary candidates will be at Pershore Baptist Church on Tuesday, May 23 from 7pm.

The Mid-Worcestershire hopefuls are also involved in a hustings at All Saints Church, Market Place, Evesham, from 7pm on Tuesday, June 6.
