A WORCESTER parliamentary candidate has intervened into the problems engulfing the city's football club - saying he is in despair over their plight.

Lib Dem Stephen Kearney says much more needs to be done over rescuing Worcester City from its exile.

The would-be MP has also urged Worcester City Council to "show leadership" over the saga, saying the fans deserve better than their club being homeless.

As the Worcester News revealed last week, a leaked document has revealed how land off Parsonage Way in Warndon Villages has been earmarked for a potential new ground.

But the long-running saga over the supporter's trust planning application for a stadium at Perdiswell Park is still rumbling on, with that bid due to be voted on first before any alternatives are re-visited.

Meanwhile the club has dropped two extra leagues down the football pyramid after taking a voluntary tumble, making its future even more precarious.

Mr Kearney said: "I think Worcester City supporters deserve better than this, frankly.

"It's quite a worry that these 'secret' talks have been going on which clearly leaves a group of volunteers (the supporter's trust) subjected to confusion.

"On one hand we've got this talk about an Environmental Impact Assessment needing to be done again for the planning application at Perdiswell and on the other hand we've got a sloppy, underhand leak.

Worcester News:

"Worcester City FC is a crucial part of this city's history, the whole history of St George's Lane was fantastic.

"What's going on right now is really dangerous, there's an absolute lack of transparency and the fans deserve better."

Last week Councillor Adrian Gregson, Worcester City Council's leader, insisted the Perdiswell planning application would still be considered as swiftly as possible.

The trust has been asked to re-do an independent environmental assessment of the Perdiswell scheme because some of the original documents are now so old.

The application was first submitted in April 2014, over three years, over creating a 4,100-capacity ground at Perdiswell Park but has been bogged down in difficulties.
